The New Charters...dynamic blues / R&B band from Cincinnati, OHIO, release their self-titled debut album
The New Charters have been playing the Cincinnati, OH /Louisville, KY area for 12 years and have now released their debut album. Guitarist and songwriter Marty Charters played with H-Bomb Ferguson for many years (including recording the 1993 Earwig Records album Wiggin' Out) before joining Junior Wells' band for several tours. Vocalist Daveed Owens (formerly of Millie Jackson's band) is a long-time veteran of the Cincinnati / Dayton R&B scene. In addition to the core band, Johnny Iguana (Junior Wells, Chicago Blues: A Living History, The Claudettes) contributes piano and organ, and Matthew Skoller plays harp on 2 cuts.
The album consists of 9 original songs and one obscure cover, and features powerful vocals and concise solos that tell a story and get out. It also has a really cool LP-era sound, with a very present snare and horns.
Daveed Owens - Vocals
Marty Charters - Guitar
Dok Tonic - Drum
Brian Lee - Bass
Ben Walkenhauer - Saxophone
Marty's review: he New Charters deliver the blues in the style of Robert Cray, Buddy Guy and Dr John. Smooth, cool and sometimes funky, every track on their debut album is a winner and sure to have you snapping your fingers and tapping your feet. Their musicianship is top notch, with silky vocals from Daveed Owens, a tight rhythm, clean guitar licks, solid gold brass and keyboards that fit right in to create and overall dynamic sound. Trying to pick a favorite track is a challenge as they all shine, but I'll say "The Cat's Meow" and "Shake and Bake" among others. A top debut album that deserves continuous listens.
