Kyshona - Soul Blues and Roots From Nashville - New Album out May 2017

Kyshona combines her unique blend of Soul, Blues and Pop with the raw and Rootsy tones of Nashville, Tennessee in her new single ‘Same Blood’, out 5th May 2017, taken from the triumphant full-length album, ‘The Ride’.

‘Same Blood’ see’s Kyshona harness her natural ability for using music to tap into emotion. Such a gift draws the listener in on an impassioned journey throughout her rousing new single, a journey that continues from beginning to end of the album ‘The Ride’. With elements of Soul, R&B and Gospel, Kyshona shows off vocal styling’s reminiscent of Aretha Franklin, Etta James and Al Green. Blessed with production so organic, you can reach out and touch the imagery summoned throughout the unifying “Same Blood”.

‘The Ride’, an emotional and musical road-trip of Soul and Blues takes in a deep breath to observe the awesome sights of a scenic route through Nashville, reflecting on the captivating journey that Kyshona has undertaken since moving to the legendary musical hub. In a town where Soul and Roots music seem to have been long forgotten in its history, Kyshona’s arrival reminds us of a town where Hendrix and Little Richard honed their artistry and where Jefferson St. housed many record labels dedicated to Blues, R&B, Soul and Gospel as the Country Music scene in Nashville was just getting started.

Kyshona began her career as a music therapist, working in mental health hospitals and correctional facilities, writing music with her patients and using music to redirect behaviors and emotions. Kyshona soon found the need to write music independently to help her process her daily experiences with her clients. Audiences often find a common thread of overcoming, hope and empowerment in her songwriting and storytelling as she uses her emotional intelligence to create her unique bluesy and soulful style of music.

Sharing the stage with Michael McDonald, Wynonna Judd and The Big Noise amongst others has seen Kyshona receive several accolades including being named one of CMT Edge’s Top 5 Roots Artists to watch in 2015, featuring on NPR’s World Cafe Nashville Sessions and her previous single, ‘Waking Light’ featuring on major network ABC’s show, Conviction. Kyshona continues to donate her time to youth empowerment programs in her community and performing for the incarcerated.

Australian blues trio Lazy Eye new release "Pocket The Black"..soul drenched blues

Soul drenched blues. Think B.B. King sharing a scotch with Booker T at the crossroads after midnight.

Lazy Eye kicked off 2016 off with a whirlwind trip across the South Pacific to the land where the Blues began. Upon reaching the quarter finals, the Hammond Organ Trio became the inaugural band to represent South Australia at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, Tennessee. Following the competition, the band played one show only at the legendary B.B. King’s Blues Club on Beale Street, a highlight of the trip, before heading home thoroughly grounded in the blues.

Having clocked up a multitude of miles in their tour van, the 2015 Group Of The Year (Australian Blues Music Awards) has not only developed a reputation as one of the hardest working bands in their home country but has also picked up a swag of accolades along the way including Best Blues Album for their debut release Move Me (2013 SA Blues & Roots), Best Blues Artist (2014 South Australian Music Awards) and nominations for Song Of The Year (Hole In My Pocket, 2015 Australian Blues Music Awards) and Most Popular Blues/Roots Artist (2016 South Australian Music Awards).

On release, their brand new offering Pocket The Black has been judged the 2016 Blues Album Of The Year (Adelaide Roots & Blues Association) and has been nominated for Album Of The Year at the 2017 Australian Blues Music Awards.

Marty's review: Pocket the Black is Lazy Eye in a live studio setting that captures the true essence of their rootsy blues with soul and delivers it in a straight forward and down to earth way. Keeping the production to as close to their live show as they can, with minimal overdubs and being able to do extra takes, the album is a collection of all original soul-blues numbers with punch and vigor that showcases the professional talents of each member.

collusion of old and new” Made In The Shade

“Whetter’s vocals are gritty with a velvety smack of soul” Sydney Morning Herald

“It’s a pleasure to see a weather-beaten Hammond fronting a band and even more so when it’s wielded with style. Such is the case with Adelaide blues outfit Lazy Eye” The Australian

“The universal recognition is testament to the hard work and drive the three piece have applied since their formation just three years ago. Their throwback blend of electric blues and old school rock ‘n’ roll has earnt them festival spots all over the country”  Rip It Up

Roots artists BROTHER PAUL new single ‘Dream On’ and new album "Cadillac Pickup Truck"

Singer-songwriter and roots artist Paul Herbert Hermann Jr. was born, raised and lives in the infamous city of Stockton, California. He started playing music seriously in the late 1960's, gigging around the Central Valley and Bay Area. After a lifetime of Rock clubs and Blues bars he has become a fixture in the California Delta Blues scene. Today the scene as well as the city has fallen on hard times, but Paul has found a new lease on life and a new outlet to make music. A recording project, BROTHER PAUL, spanning 10 years has taken songs written over a lifetime and documented, transformed and elevated them to an new album and an even tighter love and appreciation for family.

THE HEARTBREAKING STORY OF ‘DREAM ON’:

One of the first songs Paul ever recorded was titled Dream On. The idea for the song came to Paul after a dream he’d had about his wife passing away, and having to say goodbye to the love of his life and the mother to his children, Elisha. Back then, Dream On rang true as a love song. With its sincerity and honesty, it instantly became adored by family, friends and of course, by Elisha. Matthew and Paul believed it to be Paul's best composition to date.

A few short years after Dream On was written and recorded, Elisha suddenly passed away. Paul and his family were devastated, and with a tragic twist of fate, life had imitated art. The lyrics now felt like a gut-punch, and haunt the band’s debut album in a way that is both dark and wonderfully cathartic. The song lays out the story of their falling in love, their many happy years, and Paul’s last goodbye to his beloved wife.

Admittedly, for a long time the song existed as a solemn reminder of the great loss suffered by all those who were close to Elisha. But as time passed, Dream On became a reminder of how special she truly was. The task of mixing proved to be difficult, as they needed to find a way to preserve the honesty and naivety of the original performance. But as hard as the process was, it also acted as a form of therapy for Paul.

The band found the perfect final touch needed when they asked their friend, Gary Wagner, to contribute on piano and organ, which gave the song it’s distinctive, “moody builds and bright crescendos.”  From foreboding premonition, to devastating loss and eventually comforting homage, Dream On, has had an emotional but rich journey to become the song it is now. Brother Paul hopes you’ll take the ride with them, and give it a listen on their debut album, Cadillac Pickup Truck.

Detroit's Eliza Neals new release 10,000 Feet Below...gut-wrenching blues-rock with passion

"10,000 Feet Below" is spelunking the new depths of the blues with Eliza Neals as your fearless guide. Caverns of sound well up through Eliza's supernatural voice and piano driven songs, as Howard Glazer's guitar pierces the echo with honest tone, breaking and entering an abandoned temple of blues-rock left long ago, descending each rung carefully to uplift your musical soul. Producer Eliza Neals rigged the journey, surveyed then mapped the suffocating walls, while finding soulful keys through narrow fissures of sound.

Eliza Neals unflinchingly dives headfirst to underwater eyelets that only a skilled writer can reach -- falling lower to get washed up on golden grotto beaches, a new entrance to blues once left undiscovered.

Marty's review: Eliza Neals delivers her powerful blues-rock with soul and passion on this new 11 track release. 10 of the tracks are self-penned or co-written and her take on Skip James "Hard Killing Floor" is delivered in a piano driven style that even Skip himself would approve of. If you like your blues with raunch and fire then this album brings it to you with no holds barred and Eliza Neals' unique and gut-wrenching vocals will leave you breathless.

Carolina Blues Rockers Bert Wray Blues Set The Dial to Gut Bucket Radio!

Charlotte, NC, blues rockers, Bert Wray Blues, have just released their new album, Gut Bucket Radio, via Third Lock Records.

Bert Wray Blues brings together slide-guitarist/singer Bert Wray with drummer Mitch Cooper and bassist Dave Wall. The band’s music merges the vintage juke joint sound with plenty of Carolina twang and fresh songwriting. Equally inspired by Delta blues pioneers, rockabilly cats, and 1960’s blues-rockers, the trio hits the sweet spot between classic blues and good ol’ rock and roll.

Mixing the past with the present is what it is all about at Bert Wray Blues. The trio emerged from the players’ deep North Carolina musical roots. In fact, Mitch once signed Bert’s band to his Third Lock Records back in the alternative music revolution! Dave and Bert met while working in a greasy kitchen, and they bonded over their record collections and blues guitars. It was inevitable that these guys would one day join forces to create Bert Wray Blues.

The new album Gut Bucket Radio captures the band's energy and slide blues antics in an 8-song  album that takes the listener on a road trip across the blues landscapes of the past like a gut bucket radio blaring into a new century. Bert Wray Blues will be playing live to promote Gut Bucket Radio throughout 2017.

Marty's review: Bert Wray Blues bring you their vintage style blues on this 8 track release that is raw, rootsy and a whole lot of fun to listen to. The passion for the blues comes out from all 3 members and their playing is nothing short of professional without the need to be flashy about it. Just down to earth with a nod to the blues artists from the past and quality songwriting to match. Favorite tracks are "I Got the Tennessee Blues", "Little Highway Girl" and "Midwood Blues".

Tom Craig and Soul Patch debut album “ Get Ready For Me”..Memphis Blues with Soul

Tom Craig and drummer John O’Connell have been partners in Blues and Roots music for the past decade. This past year they’ve teamed up with Eric Johnson on Hammond organ, tenor saxophonist Vince Gleason and baritone saxophonist Skyler Hagner. Their broad musical resume includes musical genres such as classic Memphis Soul and R'n'B tunes by the likes of Wilson Pickett and Otis Redding as well as retro R'n'B music from James Hunter and Mayer Hawthorne, to name a few. Their love of the blues continues.

Tom Craig is a singer/songwriter/guitarist first inspired by jazz vocalists like Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, and Mel Torme; he found further inspiration in the classic '60's and '70's soul music that was recorded in Memphis and Muscle Shoals and in the blues of the Three Kings (Albert, B.B., and Freddie) as well as Muddy Waters and Stevie Ray Vaughan.

For his debut, Craig and his musical cohorts, Soul Patch, offer a sparkling collection of guitar-centric, horn-propelled, organ-cushioned originals that resonate with blues, soul, and jazz. As a singer, Craig seamlessly blends subtlety and swagger in the manner of the great jazz vocalists and as a guitarist, his clear, ringing tone and biting solos mostly evoke B.B. King. Like many of the greats who inspired him, Craig heartily understands the concept of “less is more.” His songs are a diverse bunch that include blues shuffles like “I Can't Help Myself,” a funky grinder with “Louita,” sweet swaying soul with “Ballroom Dancer,” and deep soul ballads like “Every Woman.”

"Tom Craig & Soul Patch are making the familiar fresh with grease, grit, and grace." -Thomas J. Cullen III, Bucks County Blues Society and Blues Music Magazine

Marty's review: I can't add much more than what has already been said in the above, only to say that if you like your blues with soul and the classic sounds that came out of Memphis and Muscle Shoals, then this amazing debut album will please to no end. My favorite tracks, hmmm..., all of them!! Certainly no fillers here, and the production is tight with all the passion they can muster. This is one album that will be on regular rotation.
